I have just become aware of a very interesting looking community archaeology project that will take place this summer in Baldoyle, Co. Dublin. This initiative, which has been titled, Grassroots Archaeology, aims to unearth the story of a forgotten local monument through historical and cartographic research as well as through targeted excavations.
The monument in question is the remains of probable medieval moated site, which was subsumed into a modern housing estate in the 1970s. The project will attempt to determine if any vestige of this medieval site still survives, hidden beneath the gardens and green spaces of this residential development. ‘It is hoped that the project will not only add to the archaeological knowledge of the area but will also contribute to the sense of identity and community for residents of this constructed sub-urban landscape’.
